New battleground state polls show Harris, Trump in tight race

After President Joe Biden's departure from the presidential race on Sunday, new polling shows just how tight the margins currently are in the battle for the White House.

According to Emerson College, former President Donald Trump maintains a narrow lead in multiple battleground states. In four out of five states, Trump held a slim lead, while the poll showed Vice President Kamala Harris was tied with Trump in one state.

Here is what the survey of voters taken on Monday and Tuesday shows:

• Trump up 49-44 in Arizona
• Trump up 48-46 in Georgia
• Trump up 46-45 in Michigan
• Trump up 48-46 in Pennsylvania
• Harris and Trump tied at 47-all in Wisconsin

The support for Harris was slightly better than it was for President Biden earlier this month. In Emerson College's poll between President Biden and Trump earlier this month, Trump led all five states by larger margins.

“Harris has recovered a portion of the vote for the Democrats on the presidential ticket since the fallout after the June 27 debate,” Spencer Kimball, executive director of Emerson College Polling, said in a press release. “Harris’ numbers now reflect similar support levels to those of Biden back in March.”

The poll indicated that young voters are more supportive of Harris than they were for President Biden.

“Young voters have shifted toward Harris: her support compared to Biden increased by 16 points in Arizona, eight in Georgia, five in Michigan, 11 in Pennsylvania, and one in Wisconsin since earlier polling this month," Kimball said.

The poll also showed that Harris has a better favorability rating in the five swing states than Biden.

Harris' approval rating is 10 points higher in Arizona, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin compared to President Biden. Additionally, Trump and Harris have similar favorability ratings in all five states surveyed.
