STANDOFF ENDS IN STRUCTURE FIRE, 1 INJURY — A standoff-turned-fire in the 200 block of Valley Street ended with one man seriously injured in the early hours of Friday morning in Lake Bridgeport. According to Wise County Sheriff Lane Akin, Stephen Cooley, 47, of Lake Bridgeport reportedly got into an altercation with young adults shooting fireworks off of a nearby dock around 10 p.m. Thursday. Cooley allegedly fired his shotgun into the neighborhood away from the young adults, Akin said, resulting in the Wise County Sheriff’s Office being dispatched to the scene. Cooley went inside and refused to come out, Akin said. “WCSO was able to determine there was a domestic disturbance just prior to when the reckless shooting began,” Akin said in a press release. “The WCSO Tactical Team was called out. Negotiations with Mr. Cooley were disregarded. Attempts to contact him by phone failed as well. Tear gas was deployed.” Deputies entered the residence at about 3 a.m., but Cooley had barricaded himself in a second floor bedroom. While refusing commands from the tactical team, a fire started in the residence. Deputies eventually were able to enter the part of the residence where Cooley had barricaded himself for several hours. Cooley was flown to the Parkland Burn Center. Read more online here.
