All Indiana Artist: Mona Mehas recites poetry

The Poetry Society of Indiana, dedicated to fostering the art of poetry, is now accepting submissions for its annual poetry contest through December 1. Co-director of the contest and 2023 winner of two categories, poet Mona Mehas, shared more about the event.

Mehas has been writing poetry since she was five years old, inspired by her mother who was also a poet. She described the joy of being published in “Ink to Paper,” the Society’s annual publication that features first, second, and third place winners from the contest. Last year, Mehas won first place in two categories, and she emphasized the fun and community aspect of participating in the Poetry Society.

The Poetry Society of Indiana aims to educate and promote poetry through public readings and events at venues like coffee houses. Mehas encouraged aspiring poets to enter the contest, highlighting the welcoming atmosphere and the satisfaction of seeing one’s work published alongside friends.

Mehas shared two of her poems. The first, titled When Dogs Howl At 2 a.m. , won the Life Worth Remembering Award and is an acrostic poem that captures the atmosphere and sounds of a predawn scene. The second, Tarantula , won the Babbling Brook Award and reflects on the strength and subtlety of her spirit totem.
