Man on motorcycle flees from police with dog on his lap, facing charges

TOWN OF KIRKWOOD, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – A Binghamton man is facing charges after fleeing from law enforcement with his dog in his lap.

On October 5, at around 8:31 p.m., Broome County Sheriff’s Office Road Patrol observed a motorcycle without a license plate traveling north on Interstate Route 81 near Exit 3. The deputy attempted to stop the motorcyclist, activating lights and sirens, but the motorcycle operator failed to comply.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, the motorcycle operator took the Exit 3 off ramp onto Colesville Road as they ignored multiple red lights and failed to signal while making their way to State Route 17 eastbound. Road patrol pursued. Eventually, the motorcycle had a mechanical failure and came to a stop near Exit 76 on Route 17.

As deputies approached the motorcycle, they discovered that the operator, who was identified as Trae Salisbury, 29, had been carrying an unsecured small-to-medium-sized doll on his lap throughout the pursuit. Deputies secured the dog and placed Salisbury under arrest.

According to deputies, Salisbury admitted to them that he had methamphetamine inside of his backpack. Deputies searched his backpack, and a small vial was found containing a white, crystal-like substance, which tested positive for methamphetamine.

Following the investigation, Salisbury was charged with the following:

• Unlawful Fleeing a Police Officer in a Motor Vehicle in the Third Degree, a Class A Misdemeanor
• Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the Seventh Degree, a Class A Misdemeanor
• Obstruction of Governmental Administration in the Second Degree, a Class A Misdemeanor
• Carrying and Animal in a Cruel Manner, a Misdemeanor
• Numerous traffic violations
