BINGHAMTON, NY (WIVT/WBGH) – Hundreds of BOCES students gathered on the main campus this afternoon to break ground at the school’s new, state-of-the-art trade complex.

Broome-Tioga BOCES is building a new facility that will serve as a training hub for students interested in heavy equipment and the trades.

The project is over $1.4 million, with a large grant secured by Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo.

The grant money was used to purchase a MACK Truck, so students can train for their CDL license while at school.

The director of the Center for Career and Technical Excellence, Matt Sheehan, says the project will also build a garage to house the school’s fleet of heavy equipment.

Director, Center for CTE at Broome-Tioga BOCES, Matt Sheehan says, “We’ll have a building that our actual trucks will go in and be safe and be taken our of the weather. We have a road around the outside. It sounds like a little thing. Having a road around the outside is a huge deal because we now are driving our MACK Truck for our CDL-A students hopefully in the near future, around and their practice. If it wasn’t for all of these little things, you wouldn’t notice, says Sheehan.”

The complex will also include a solar farm that BOCES students will install and disassemble every year for practice.

LaBella Associates is the contractor for the project.

The school says there are several former BOCES students on the construction crew.
