TOWN OF DICKINSON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – Some local members of law enforcement will be sporting some colorful patches and badges this month to aid in the fight against breast cancer.

The Broome County Sheriff’s Office is once again offering pink patches and pink badges for its officers to wear during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

This year, the department launched a logo design contest for graphics that will be available on apparel from an online fundraising store.

The winner is Binghamton graphic design artists Erin Hagerman.

Corrections Officer Jennifer McPeek first brought the idea for pink patches to Sheriff Fred Akshar last year. She says she’s heartened by the positive response.

“People across the country contacted me about what we’re doing and wanting our patches as part of their collection for the fight against breast cancer, breast cancer awareness. My mom’s a survivor and my sister-in-law. So, it feels really good to be able to do something like this for a good cause,” said McPeek.

Through donations from over 80 members of the Sheriff’s Office and sales at the online store, the Pink Patch Project raised more than $4,500 last year.

The money raised this year will go to Traci’s Hope which provides grants to local breast cancer patients to cover non-medical expenses.

Endicott, Binghamton and Vestal Police Departments also have pink patch and badge programs as well.
