BINGHAMTON, NY (WIVT/WBGH) – East Middle School held its Hispanic Heritage assembly, to highlight students from Latin backgrounds and to introduce others to their culture.

Binghamton’s East Middle schoolers decked out their auditorium with flags and vibrant colors, for an assembly celebrating Hispanic roots.

The students listed off all 21 countries and learned some basic words and phrases in Spanish.

A local dance group showed the students how to dance the salsa, and other traditional dance moves.

One of the organizers, Caleb Campbell, says a video played during the assembly of several Hispanic students talking about their favorite part of their culture.

“It doesn’t matter if you’re Hispanic or not. We’re all here to celebrate those people and here, and in our country. And it means a lot because not everyone gets to know all of the wonderful traditions, all of the wonderful cultures that encapsulate all 21 countries,” says Campbell.

The students made crafts and flags representing all 21 of the Hispanic countries.

The atmosphere was lively, and students were encouraged to cheer for their favorite countries.
