BINGHAMTON, NY (WIVT/WBGH) — The City of Binghamton is gearing up for the upcoming long weekend with a tradition that’s lasted over six decades.

This Monday is Binghamton’s Columbus Day Parade and Italian Festival. Festivities will take place in Downtown Binghamton, beginning at 9 a.m. with the raising of the Italian flag outside of city hall.

The grand Marshall in this year’s parade is the former Binghamton Mayor and proud Italian American, Rich Bucci.

“Columbus Day is the celebration of an epic journey. Of an Italian explorer who dared to dream, and whose voyages are deeply entwined with our heritage. These are voyages that truly change the history of the world. And that’s what we celebrate this weekend,” Bucci said.

The parade will of course feature local schools, competing in the annual marching band competition. Then, following the parade, local Italian organizations will be selling homemade Italian foods like meatballs and desserts.

The band, Rooster and the Roadhouse Horns will perform live after the parade at the band stand.

"an Italian explorer who dared to dream"? you mean a colonizing murd3r3r who stole land from natives enslaving and ki11ing them? Why is this man being celebrated. He didn't even discover America, Amerigo Gaspucci I believe his name was did. So like genuinely in 2024 why are we celebrating this horrific man? #dobetter
