ENDICOTT, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – The state is coming to the rescue to try and resolve Endicott’s ongoing drinking water woes.

The New York Environmental Facilities Corporation is giving the village a series of loans and grants to both add filtration to its existing Rainey well as well as drill a new one.

Endicott is receiving a $4.5 million interest free loan and a nearly $9 million market rate loan along with a $5 million grant to add additional treatment to the Rainey well near Grippen Park to remove iron, manganese and 1,4-dioxane contamination.

New York is also providing a $3 million interest-free loan and over $4 million grant toward drilling a new well in the Fairmont Park neighborhood of the Town of Union.

Mayor Nick Burlingame says the village has purchased the land and already has a pump station nearby from when it buys water from Johnson City.

Endicott has struggled to meet its water needs for several years since it had to decommission a pair of contaminated wells on South Street.

Burlingame says it’s great news and he hopes to have the new well online by next year or the year after.
