BINGHAMTON, NY (WIVT/WBGH) – The day is finally here, as lines were running out the door for the first day of early voting.

Today is referred to as Golden Day, meaning, it is both the first day of early voting and the last day that you can register to vote.

The Republican Commissioner for Broome County Elections , Mark Smith, says the turnout so far has been great.

He says this year, Broome County received over 9,000 requests for new voter registrations.

As well as over 11,000 requests for absentee ballots and new this year, vote by mail.

Republican Commissioner for Broome County Elections, Mark Smith says, “Reports across the county all five early voting locations seeing a great turnout. Our election staff works so hard all year long, behind the scenes, not just this week, not just next week. Our election staff works so hard, so its so rewarding for the Broome County elections to see this type of turnout, even just on the first day,” says Smith.

Today was the last day to request an absentee or vote by mail ballot.

The five early voting locations include the Broome County Public Library, the George F. Johnson Memorial Library, the Oakdale Commons, the Taste NY building on Upper Front Street, and the Vestal Public Library.

Every site is open every day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., except on Mondays and Tuesdays they will be open from noon till 8 p.m.

Early voting ends after November 3rd.
