AUGUSTA, G.A. (WJBF)- Some big donations for Paine College.  A presentation was held this morning on campus at the Candler Memorial Library.

A little over $200,000 was donated today at the Candler Memorial Library– a way for folks to show their support.

“The Johnson family, Butch and Tracy Gallop contributed an additional $50,000, the Alumni Association– throughout the state, throughout the CSRA– donated $125,000, and myself and my late sister Dr. Vera Thurmond contributed $25,000,” Attorney Michael Thurmond, Chairman, Board of Trustees said.

Paine College associates I spoke with say, those are just some of the people who believe in the future of the institution– to them, that means a lot.

“We’re expecting a historical increase in the number of freshmen who will enter here in August. We’re moving in the right direction– there’s still challenges that we face, but so much good is taking place, so much progress is being made, and today’s $200 plus thousand contribution is evidence of that,” Thurmond said.

Paine College President, Dr. Cheryl Jones tells me faculty, staff, and students will feel the impact of these donations.

“We will use it wisely, and again, so much appreciate the support that was shown here this morning. We had a good attendance, a lot of alums were here and that shows that people believe in Paine College, and we need to be around for another 142 years,” Paine College President Dr. Cheryl Jones said.

Faculty and staff say they look forward to growth in the near future.

“It’s exciting, it’s very exciting to have the donations that were announced today, we are indeed honored and appreciative…,” Dr. Jones said.

Paine College is the only HBCU in the CSRA and faculty and staff say they’re grateful for the collective support.

I think Paine was founded in the late 1800's and the enrollment is extremely small, so the point can only be HBCU. The University System gobbles up schools all the time and renames them. I know Paine is private, but what's so wrong with them becoming part of AU, or maybe they become a sat campus for another HBCU like Morehouse. Generally, I hate it for the alumni because they have to step up and save the school, whereas the school should be stepping up and helping them. I hope they have some good auditors checking the books at Paine.

Why would anyone ever pursue a degree at a school with no accreditation? They should close it. They’re just stealing students or government money.
