(WJBF) – We are continuing to following developments after several airlines worldwide began seeing major disruptions due to a huge Microsoft and Crowdstrike outage.
The widespread Microsoft outage is disrupting flights with American and Delta, Allegiant Air, Pacific Southwest Airlines, and Spirit Airlines, as well as banks, media outlets and companies around the world.
The outage is also impacting Visa, Amazon and ADT Security.
Closer to home at Augusta Regional Airport, almost all flights have been grounded. An airport spokesperson tells us this will likely have a ripple effect throughout the day.
“Augusta Regional Airport (AGS) still showing effects of the global ground stop. AGS continues to be in direct contact with Delta and American Airlines, which service AGS. As of 8:02 a.m., American Airlines began their flight recovery. All American Arline flights for July 19 th are showing delays currently. All Delta flights through AGS are still showing cancelled through 1:50 p.m. today, however, we encourage all passengers to contact their airline directly for the most up-to-date flight information.”
Hours prior to it happening, Microsoft said it was fixing an issue affecting access to Microsoft 365 apps and services.
MORE ON WJBF: Widespread disruptions were not the result of security incident or cyberattack: CrowdStrike Columbia Metropolitan Airport tells us, “CAE and its airline partners – United Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines – are closely monitoring the current global IT outage impacting air travel. As of right now, passengers flying out of CAE this morning are able to check in, however flights are grounded until further notice. Passengers are encouraged to stay updated on possible delays through their airline’s mobile app. We will provide more information on our social channels as additional details are made available.”
The Atlanta Airport has stated, “ATL is actively addressing the current incident affecting various industries globally. Working closely with partners, ATL is focused on minimizing operational disruptions. Travelers are advised to stay informed through ATL’s social media channels for updates.”
The FAA has issued the following statement:
The FAA is closely monitoring a technical issue impacting IT systems at U.S. airlines. Several airlines have requested FAA assistance with ground stops until the issue is resolved.
We continue to work closely with airlines as they work to resume normal operations. Ground stops and delays will be intermittent at various airports as the airlines work through residual technology issues. Contact the airlines for more information.
Currently FAA operations are not impacted by the global IT issue. We continue to monitor the situation closely.
