EDGEFIELD, S.C. (WJBF) — The Historic Plantation House on the town square has been sold to a South Carolina developer. They’re pouring big money into its revitalization. “That’s a lot of work to be done, that’s for sure,” Edgefield County resident Joseph Mosley said while looking into the window. “These people can take something like this, and you’d be surprised what the outcome would be. “

Edgefield’s historic Plantation House has been sold. It was labeled a hazard in 2014 and sat vacant until Preservation South Carolina took over in 2017. “It was a state of the art hotel and it then later became a home for veterans and then the Mims kind of lived in it and after that it just kind of went down,” Lucille Burton recalled.

The developer, Greenville’s B&B Real Estate Company, plans to breathe new life into the property. “I do recall them saying that whomever purchased it had a good track record of taking properties like this and, and developing into, nice, venues that the city in which they are located,” Mosley recalled.

People we spoke to hope the new owners will turn it into a venue that benefits the entire community. “I would like to see a restaurant, something that would be open at night,” lifelong Edgefield resident Cissy Penner shared. “A nice bar up there on the balcony would be awesome.”

“Have a hotel and see they have little, offices on the bottom where they could put in other businesses that would help bring tourism and other things to Edgefield,” Burton added.

That could also bring more foot traffic to small businesses along the square, like Made & Found SC. “It would be awesome to have it like a destination where they would just walk around the square and come shop and meet and do all the fun stuff,” Shaila Varner shared.

Meanwhile, in a statement on Facebook, Preservation South Carolina says they’re committed to saving this historic property. They’ll share more about its reuse soon. “It’s just really beautiful. Like, I love the architecture in there and all the like, pieces of furniture. I mean, I just see a lot of potential for sure,” she added while looking inside.

We did reach out to town leaders for more details on the redevelopment plans. We’ll let you know when we find out more.
