AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – August 26th is Women’s Equality Day, and the League of Women Voters of the CSRA celebrated a day early.

The League of Women Voters of the CSRA put on a suffrage fashion show called Votes and Petticoats to celebrate Women’s Equality Day.

“History is very important, so we know that we don’t make repeatable mistakes, and we can learn from our mistakes in the past and grow,” said Rhonda McDaniel, a supporter . “Anything that I can do because our vote is our voice, and if we no vote, no voice.”

The event had guest speakers and a fashion show featuring the Freedom Collection from the designer Melanie Caballero.

“As soon as you wake up, you’re wearing something. Like, it was so many meanings, things like the colors. The purple, the yellow, it just fashion is part of our everyday life,” said Melanie Caballero, the designer.

It focused on how fashion and colors were symbols during the suffrage movement.

“To win the right to vote was over ten years in the process, and we’re in an election year right now, and so it is so important for people to get out and exercise that right to vote,” said Gayla Keesee, Co-President of League of Voters of the CSRA. “And one of the things we’re call attention to is the 19th amendment really only gave some women the right to vote.”

Speakers discussed the importance of women going out to vote and the history of the 19th Amendment.

“In 1960, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Voter Rights Act, and that’s when women of all colors were given the right to vote,” said Janice Sims, a model.

A model I spoke to also had her 8-year-old daughter in the fashion show, bringing her with her every time she votes.

“It’s really inspiring to see so many people here and be able to share this with everyone,” said April Hendreschke, a model.
