GROVETOWN, Ga. (WJBF) – Grovetown is growing, with a new housing development popping up in the city.

While many people are flocking to the area, a city spokesperson said the new Ferguson Farms subdivision is the only brand new housing development within city limits.

It’s on old Berzelia Rd. off of Harlem Grovetown Rd. Those who visit the area often said they understand the growth and why the housing is needed.

“I believe it’s growing so much, you know you got Fort Eisenhower over there and you got all these military people coming in this area right here,” said Walter Edwards.

Edwards has concerns about traffic, and how the infrastructure will keep up with demand.

“If you don’t get out and leave at a certain time of the day, you can’t get out because the traffic coming from Fort Eisenhower, it be so bad and congested so you just can’t get out,” he said. “And like going up this road to Harlem Grovetown road, they need to put a red light up there.”

Jordan Johnson, the PIO for Grovetown, said the city takes these concerns into consideration when approving a new project.

“We do what we can to alleviate those concerns,” he said. “Efficient, proper planning in advance is the most important thing, and our planning and community development department truly does a fantastic job of managing that growth and making sure that it’s sustainable for the 18,000 citizens we have here.”

But, some projects don’t fall under city jurisdiction.

“We have some state routes here that run through Grovetown that we don’t have control over, so some of the planning that takes place regarding those routes, really we have no say over,” he said.

Johnson said Grovetown is one of the fastest growing cities in Georgia. Since 2010, its population has grown by about 65%.

“Any time a citizen has a concern about the growth that they’re seeing or wants to discuss an idea that they may have to alleviate some traffic or just any kind of concern, we welcome that. Bring that to us, we want to have the discussion with you, we want to find ways to make our city better,” Johnson said.

A ribbon cutting ceremony for the new 100-unit subdivision will be on September 18th at 11:30 am.
