Golden Harvest and Feeding America working to curb hunger

AUGUSTA, G.A. (WJBF)- September is Hunger Action Month– a time that focuses on raising awareness for hunger in America. And right here in the CSRA, the need for food is great.

This month, the color orange carries a whole new meaning– helping to bring an end to hunger in America and in the CSRA.

“One in four children, one in seven individuals in our 25-county service area that are struggling with food insecurity. It’s the highest rate in our area in 15 years…,” CEO Golden Harvest Food Bank Amy Breitmann said.

While the month of September focuses on curbing hunger, September 10th– “Hunger Action Day”– encourages you to wear orange in effort of spreading the message.

“The color for hunger action month is orange. So, we encourage people to wear orange– we’ve got t-shirts that say, ‘this is my hunger-fighting t-shirt.’ So, we’re wearing those, again just encouraging the community to take action this month because it is a month we can really shed a light on this and do some great work together,” Breitmann said.

While it’s the color orange that grabs people’s attention, Golden Harvest CEO tells me it’s the effort that makes the difference.

“We think it’s important for everyone to be involved in this we have about 60 employees and hundred, and hundreds of volunteers every month– and 350 partners. But it takes everyone in the community to fight hunger.”

Each day, this month, Feeding America presents a challenge to raise money. Today is “Start a Team Feed Fundraiser.” Here at Golden Harvest, they’re creating another movement.

“Asking what they’re doing to help fight this cause it takes so many of us. And then challenging the community to come and volunteer or donate…”
