AUGUSTA, Ga (WJBF)- Thursday night, Savannah River Nuclear Solutions will host its annual CSRA College Night event for high school students.

There is a change of venue this year. Since the James Brown arena is closed for construction, CSRA College night will be here at the Augusta Convention Center.

Students will have the chance to meet and speak with representatives from more than 100 colleges, universities and tech schools.

High school seniors will also have a chance to register to win one of 15- $1,000 scholarships.

Parents and student will be able to attend seminars on financial aid, financial literacy and SRS apprenticeships.

Organizers encourage all students to attend, even if they are unsure of what they want to do after high school.

“Even if, in their mind, they’re thinking ‘College is not for me.’ We will have technical colleges there and we will have the apprenticeship program there, which are not college track programs. But, you know, you might think college isn’t for you, but maybe when you walk in and you see some of those colleges, you might rethink it,” said Cindy Hewitt, Education Outreach at SRNS.

Hewitt added that the event has had a significant impact on local students planning for the future.

“We have given over $400,000 in scholarship money to seniors. We have seen over 200,00 to 300,000 students as it’s been held. Or if you’re in 9th and 10th grade, you’ll actually get a better understanding of what kind of GPA do I need? You know, what kind of classes do I need to take? What kind of fields are out there for me, so that you can be better prepared when you’re a senior.”

CSRA College Night is open to all high school students and free to attend. It will take place at the Augusta Convention Center on 10th Street in downtown Augusta from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m., Thursday, September 12.
