AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) — The Augusta African American Historical Society is dedicated to highlighting influential Black figures from Augusta’s past.

The society, founded 24 years ago by former Mayor Edward McIntyre, focuses on educating the community, especially young people, about Augusta’s rich Black history.

Notable figures like AR Johnson, Georgia’s first Black teacher, and John Wesley Gilbert, a pioneering archaeologist, are among those honored. “There are just loads of people like that with stories that our people need to know about. Everybody needs to know about,” Dr. Mallory Millender said.

The society has already established 26 monuments on Laney Walker Boulevard, with plans for 50. Selection is managed by a research committee that evaluates the historical significance of potential honorees.

Monuments can be viewed along Laney Walker Boulevard, from R.A. Dent Blvd to 11th Street.

For those interested in supporting this important work, donations can be sent to PO Box 456, Augusta, GA 30901.

While tearing down statues of historic white figures. So sick of the new racist double standard.
