SOUTH CAROLINA (WJBF) – The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) is reminding individuals about the dangers and consequences of school threats.

According to SLED, the department is aware of over 60 threats targeting schools throughout 23 counties since Sept. 4, 2024 when a mass shooting took place at Apalachee High School in Winder, Ga.

As of Sept. 17, at least 21 juveniles in South Carolina have been charged in connection to threats, many of which have been shared via social media or messaging apps.

“School threats are not a joke,” said SLED Chief Mark Keel. “Law enforcement takes every threat
seriously, and everyone needs to understand that there are serious consequences.”

In Aiken County, an 11-year-old and a 12-year old were charged this week after making threats on social media.

SLED mentioned they are continuing to work with local law enforcement and well state and federal partners regarding incidents. According to SLED, their Behavioral Science Unit has been requested to assist with six school threat investigations across different counties.
