AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – The 15th Ironman 70.3 Augusta triathlon is happening this Sunday, and for the “Mom’s Prayer Warriors” relay group, this year’s race is a little more special.

“We decided to make the race about our moms, so the team’s name is ‘Mom’s Prayer Warriors,’” said team captain Teresa Pearson Eddy.

Eddy is doing the biking portion, David Huskey is doing the swim portion, and Cody Henderson is doing the running portion of the triathlon.

“I’ve never done anything like this at all, I’m really excited about being the runner,” Henderson said. “It’s the last leg of the race, so I just kind of feel at peace with it. I feel like this is a really great thing to be a part of.”

Eddy’s mother, Monica Pearson, recently beat ovarian cancer and Huskey’s mother, Brenda, passed away earlier this year.

The group wants to honor their mothers through the race.

“For Monica especially, everything that she’s been through, I just wanna push hard for that and then for David’s mom, wanna push hard for her too and of course for my mom as well,” Henderson said.

“It just makes it extra special to get to the finish line and obviously we’re all gonna possibly experience pain, and I’ll just be thinking about what all my mom’s been through and it’s gonna get me to that finish line,” Eddy said.

“I had just recently lost my mom,” Huskey said. “It was just really such an honor to be asked to do that. It’s really been a blessing to know that they’re training for a purpose and I’m training for a purpose, and we’re gonna put it all together as a team on Sunday.”

And Monica Pearson couldn’t be prouder.

“It’s overwhelming, it’s really exciting and makes me feel real happy about it,” she said.
