Atlanta Gas Light tracking more than 400 gas leaks across Georgia, 80% in Augusta area

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – According to a spokesperson for Atlanta Gas Light, they are currently tracking more than 400 gas leaks across the state of Georgia.

Of those hundreds of gas leaks, more than 80% of them are located in the Augusta area and are due to exposed gas lines that were broken by trees that have been uprooted due to Hurricane Helene.

Augusta, according to the spokesperson, has experienced the worst damage to the gas line infrastructure of anywhere in their coverage area.

Their Office says that repairs to those damaged lines are taking longer than expected due to difficult traveling conditions in the Augusta area.

If you smell or see a gas leak, you should immediately get as much distance as possible from the leak, until you can no longer see or smell it, and then call 1-877-427-4321. If reporting a gas leak, do not use a cell phone in the immediate vicinity. Additionally, do not operate machinery near a gas leak and make sure there are no open flames nearby.

Currently, though, the spokesperson says, there is no natural gas outages, despite the hundreds of leaks in the Augusta area alone.
