AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – The beautiful campus of Augusta University littered with trees.

Those trees have stood for years, but many could not withstand Hurricane Helene.

Also, the Fleming Avenue traffic light touched ground due to Helene.

Weather officials confirmed winds as high as 84 mph, which ultimately caused the damage.

However, despite all of the damage, residents, who live in these impacted neighborhoods say this is what community means, and one man says he is thankful for his neighbors.

“We all know each other by name, pretty much from one end to the other— but times like this gets you out in the street holding hands. Right across the street, a huge tree fell out of one yard, across the brick wall and into another yard and the guys just from the neighborhood have been pulling up chain saws and trying to cut their way so that people can get in and out of the street,” says Jim Cartee, who lives in Summerville.
