AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – A water distribution event was held today after the City of Augusta announced there would be a temporary disruption of water.

Many in the community are worried about what this means for them.

“We’ve been here; we’re going to continue to be here. We’re going to continue to ask for prayers and were going to ask that you just be patient,” said Mayor Garnett Johnson.

Sunday, Augusta Utilities announced that there would be a temporary disruption in the water system for all of Augusta for 24 to 48 hours. This is due to the pumps experiencing trash and debris from high water levels. But local leaders say this is a top priority for the county.

“The highest priority that we’re working towards with the state resources and coordination with the team here is restoration of water,” said Mark Sexton, GEMA.

The city held a water distribution center Sunday at the Augusta Municipal Building to help those without water.

“We can’t help that because they got to do what they got to do. It’s a lot of people coming down here to help us, so I can’t even say anything. Thank you, that’s all I can say,” said Lyniyah Herington, a resident.

Those who were able to come were thankful for the opportunity to get water bottles before the water shut off.

“It helps. I mean, everything helps nowadays,” said Eric Bryant, a resident.

Many questioned how those who may not be able to get to these centers will get water.

“Challenges you mentioned how can we get more water to the people. First, we have to have the water. Once we get the water, I assure you that we will start getting it to where it needs. We’re not going to continue to ask people to come drive to get a case of water,” said Johnson.

Mayor Garnett Johnson also stated that hospitals in Augusta are still operational; Georgia Power has 5,000 linemen coming to the region by Monday, stating that 95% of residents will have power by October 5th.

“It’s all about community, you know what I’m saying. Without the community, you’re just by yourself, and it’s going to be way harder on you, you feel me. Everybody comes together and works together, and we can get through this,” said Amaar Surry, a resident.

If you need water Richmond County will be distributing water at 8 a.m. Monday, September 30th, at the Augusta Municipal Building at 535 Telfair Street, followed by a distribution of food and water between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. at 1631 Gordon Highway at the Southgate Shopping Center.

Mayor Johnson also stated there will be a commission meeting tomorrow virtually at 2 p.m. where they may be discussing updates.
