‘The Good Neighbor Express’ helps Augusta residents during Helene recovery

AUGUSTA (WJBF) – Dekalb County is helping the city of Augusta with food for the community.

‘The Good Neighbor Express’ is traveling to the Garden City with 5-thousand boxes full of produce, sanitizers, masks and COVID-19 tests.

Distribution sites started to open early Friday morning.

One of those locations was Greater Young Zion Baptist Church.

The CEO of Dekalb County coordinated with Augusta Mayor Garnett Johnson to make this event happen for the community.

“We want our friends, our neighbors to know that they are not alone. We are here to provide  food, nutritious fruits, vegetables, supplies to help them weather the storm,” said CEO Michael Thurmond.

Mayor Johnson said they are headed to various neighborhoods Friday.

“Many residents have not had the ability to get to our distribution points at Southgate Plaza, at The Depot or out at Diamond Lakes but we’re coming to them.”

At 2 p.m., residents can go to Broadway Baptist on Barton Chapel Road and at 4 p.m., Faith Outreach Church on Willis Foreman Road.
