COLUMBIA, SC (WJBF)- The South Carolina High School League approved a one-week extension to the football regular season.

The executive committee agreed to keep the playoffs at five rounds. This now means that the State Championship weekend will be December 12th through the 14th.

According to the South Carolina High School League, around 66 football games were missed statewide. That’s due to the two weeks of school closures from Hurricane Helene.

The Georgia High School Association decided to make the same extension last week.

“The GHSA is giving one extra week is going to really help. We’re still going to find another space in that season to make up a game, and that’s going to create some challenges. The GHSA extending the season is really going to help for that,” said Columbia County Director of Athletics Chris Hughes.
