AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – Augusta Mayor Garnett Johnson announced the City of Augusta’s curfew is over during a wide-ranging news conference on Wednesday, nearly two weeks after Helene.

“We continue to operate one of our points of delivery out of Southgate Plaza, today will be the final day that we distribute water and tarps…” Mayor Johnson said.

It’s a sign of progression for the City of Augusta. Mayor Johnson assured Augusta residents of its return to normalcy.

“98% of our community in Augusta-Richmond County has been restored. That leaves two percent remaining, which translates to 2,270 customers.”

The mayor said the curfew is no longer needed and it’s safe to drive in Augusta at night.

“We feel strongly that we’re in a position now with the number of traffic signals that we have operating that is no longer needed,” he said. “However, I’m going to continue to stress to be safe and that some of these intersections that don’t have operating signals, they have stop signs there and we’re asking that you continue to operate in the same manner. If there’s not an operating traffic signal, consider it like a four-way stop.”

Augusta Fire Chief and EMA Director Antonio Burden pointed out there are resources to help those who were displaced by Helene.

“FEMA– so, FEMA is actively canvassing door to door in the city of Augusta,” he said. “They’re offering disaster assistance to those that are affected by hurricane Helene. I’ll remind those that they can seek help online at DisasterAssistance.gov, or they can call 1-800-621-3362.”

While the Garden City is looking hopeful, city leaders are still encourage you to reach out if needed.

“We’re here for you if you need help, please do not hesitate to reach out to us,” Chief Burden said.
