AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – A mother and her special needs son who were impacted by Hurricane Helene are getting some help tonight. We told you about them Tuesday.

“This huge set back, I mean – as they say – it’s an act of God…,” Interim Healthcare of Augusta Cutter Mitchell said.

“It was me and my special needs son in the house. I heard the noise, so I moved him from his room, then I moved him to my room, then I moved him in the living room. Once I moved him in the living room, I turned around. The tree came falling down, so I had to turn around and shield him so it wouldn’t fall on him. So, it caught right there,” Tiffany Marshall said.

“They were lucky to make it out alive, I think,” Mitchell said.

It’s something no one ever hopes for. But as caretaker for Tiffany Marshall’s special needs son, Nico, Cutter Mitchell says Marshall was doing great before being faced with this hardship.

“She was having to work three jobs to support her family, she also has a daughter. And we just got her, helped her get through, she just got full-time one job.”

But Marshall’s challenges are a little more unique, as she is the mother of two – including Nico, who has Cerebral Palsy.

“Nico, he’s a really fun kid, he – the thing that people don’t understand, I think, with cerebral palsy – is that mentally, you’re all there. Physically, it’s a nightmare for you…” Mitchell said. “He didn’t have the hospital bed that was on order for over a year, he didn’t have his Hoyer lift that means that Tiffany would have to pick him up and carry him through the hallways and all that kind of stuff…So what we did was we worked to get her all the equipment and everything that she needed – all the supports that she needed – so that we could, then, appropriately service Nico.”

And since all that has been destroyed, along with their home, Mitchell says they had to act fast– finding Mitchell temporary housing for now, but there is more to come.

“Trying to work with FEMA and all of that to get them a new home, a new trailer. And the hope is that we can take a – find silver lining in this all, here. Trying to find, maybe a more permanent type of housing solution.”

Mitchell has helped the Marshall family jumpstart a GoFundMe page, accepting donations to help get Nico and his family a safe and healthy place to call home. If you’d like to donate visit here .
