Handling Helene aftermath with humor in Augusta

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – The storm scarred the landscape of Augusta, everywhere you look…but some are making the best of this bad situation.

“They had to find humor in it, because if they would have sat around and been depressed, it would have made the situation worse,” said Linda Nero.

Here’s a bad situation…a big pine tree down in the yard, but now it’s become a stage for skeleton Halloween decorations; the skeleton dog looking for a treat.

This is Helen Street in Augusta, but some neighbor went rogue and added the letter ‘e’ to the street sign…so it’s Helene Street

“That’s pretty impressive. I would say that’s a good way to have a sense of humor during this time,” said Dominique Barabino.

Here, an oak tree trunk set aside as storm debris becomes a canvas for what appears to be Pac-Man and a jack-o-lantern.

“Happy Halloween, that’s all I can say,” said Dominique.

This is Mockingbird Hill, Augusta’s tiniest village. Looks like the windmill suffered some damage, but at the big house they got the storm debris stacked up ready to be hauled away.

Down on Telfair Street, there is a lot of tree damage but here is a reason to smile. The state champion Crepe Myrtle that was in the news because of the Telfair Street Road project survived Helene. No winds of change here.

“Okay nice,” said Dominique.

The big storm wasn’t nice, but some are finding the silver lining after the storm clouds. The city is getting its second wind.
