ALLENDALE, S.C. (WJBF) – A fight in the stands that ended Friday night’s homecoming game early on Oct. 11 has school leaders are tightening security and adjusting schedules to keep students safe.

“Allendale County is better than this,” said Dr. Vallerie Cave, Superintendent of Allendale County Schools. “I know. I know that we’ll rebound from this. My children are strong. This community is strong.”

A soft lockdown went into place after students fought at Friday’s football game. It’s now postponed with plans to reschedule.

Our camera was rolling when the incident happened.

The school made the call to be cautious while they investigate as they’re working with law enforcement. Students will be disciplined, but the district isn’t sharing the details.

“It happens over a period of time,” Cave said. “I think that community influences, what happens within our schools.”

Now, only designated entrances will be used for entry and exit. All other doors will remain locked. The district also adjusted schedules. Older students rotate through the cafeteria, while younger students eat in classrooms.

Buses now use different routes for drop-off and pick-up.

“We have more monitors in the hallways,” Cave said. “We’re releasing one class at a time to ensure an orderly transition.”

The lockdown is expected to last a few more days. Students and parents are cooperating well, according to the school. The school will continue tracking discipline to monitor behavior.

“If children want to tell us something, they can send an email,” Cave said. “We have email alerts and anonymous tips to track different things that go on in our building.”

Parents are asked to discuss behavior and education with their children and school leaders will share more about plans for this Friday’s game later this week.
