Barnwell’s Cameron Austin named Scholar Athlete of the Week

AUGUSTA, GA (WJBF) – Cam is a two-sport star for the Warhorses playing football and baseball. So far this season, he has led the football team to a 6-1 start, and last year he led the baseball team to the postseason. In the classroom he has excellent grades and is in the top 5 of his graduating class. For his hard work both in the classroom and in his athletic endeavors, Cameron has been named WJBF Scholar Athlete of the Week.

Cam says he’s grateful to his family, his team, and the community for supporting him. “It’s been outstanding. My family, they’re awesome. They support me in everything, they take me to everything, they push me to be the best person I can be, says Cameron, “everyone else, the coaches, my support system, my teammates, it’s all awesome.”

Cam also has a strong support system at home, with his parents say they couldn’t be prouder if who their son is becoming. “We’re obviously proud of his accomplishments on the field, but none of that would really mean anything if he didn’t take care of business in the classroom. It’s good to see that he handles his stuff in the classroom,” says dad Blake Austin, “we don’t really push him too much and he does it all on his own, he goes to practice, he lifts weights, so he really does a good job with time management.”

Cameron’s coaches have also seen his hard work and say his presence on the team makes everyone around him better. “He’s our number one pitcher, he’s not really a loud guy but he leads by example. He plays hard, he plays fast, he does everything we ask him to do, the team relies on him,” explains Head Baseball Coach Cody Mccollum, “when he’s on the mound we always have a chance to win, when he’s in the lineup we always have a chance to get a base hit, he’s the guy you want at the plate when you’ve got the game on the line.”

His football coach agrees saying it is always fun to coach Cam. “We’re always happy with Cam, he does a great job as a leader in our school, our community, and on our team,” says Football Coach Brian Smith, “he’s always the hardest worker in the weight room, on the field at practice, and during ball games so he sets a great example for people to follow everything he does.”

Cam has had offers from multiple colleges, but he hasn’t picked one to call home just yet. A huge congratulations to Cameron Austin and his family!
