AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – The house went into flames on October 9th, and now they are staying in a camper and tent on their land.

The house is a part of a big area of land the family owns and has been passed down through generations.

“I’m just trying to deal with my grief right now. I’m just trying to deal with it,” said Pierce Mims, who Grew up in the house.

Only the mother-in-law was in the house at the time of the fire due to ongoing renovations. They were still staying on the property and were devastated when the house caught on fire.

“I ran as fast as I could all the way through the house, and I got right there to the front door and jumped out. My son-in-law caught me and helped me. I was screaming,” said Kathy Rosier Corder, who Lived in the house.

They lost everything, including baby books, clothes, and even one of their pets.

“I raised my babies in this house. We were here for six years. I had a cat that was a dwarf. She died in my bedroom waiting for me to come in there,” said Christina Mims, Lived in the house. “So, for us to look at this house and know that there’s nothing we could have done to save it. It hurts.”

They told me that over 30 neighbors have helped and given donations of clothes, the camper, and more during their time of need.

“They’re just pouring out wonderful love and genuine kindness, and everybody that comes by is almost 99%, they stop,” said Mims.

They told me they want to thank the Red Cross for assisting them as much as possible, and they are currently in the process with FEMA.

“To me, this is home. My baby’s first home. Well, it was not his first home, but the first place he ever came to was my husband’s, you know, family’s home. And we had a lot of good times,” said Mims.

They chose to stay on their land because this is their home.

“It’s just home to tell you the truth. I don’t want to leave,” said Corder.

The family tells me they believe it was caused by a generator that was plugged into an extension cord.
