    Smyth County airport receives state funding for removal project

    SMYTH COUNTY, Va. (WJHL) — Mountain Empire Airport, located in Smyth County, Virginia, received $50,000 in state funding for an obstruction removal project.

    The Virginia Aviation Board announced on Wednesday that $9.5 million will go towards projects at airports across the Commonwealth.

    Mountain Empire Airport, located at 8223 Lee Highway in Rural Retreat, was awarded $50,430 for an obstruction removal – runway object-free area grading (construction) project.

    The state funds will span across 19 airports and cover 28 projects, the Virginia Aviation Board stated.
