EMORY, Va. (WJHL) – Since 1836, Emory & Henry College has been a household name in Southwest Virginia. But starting in the fall, the school will see major changes, most prominently to its name.

PREVIOUS: Emory & Henry officially gains university status

On Aug. 1, the school officially transitioned from a College to a University. According to interim president Dr. Lou Fincher, the change showcases the school’s reach in the region.

“It really is about what we have been doing for the last 10 years,” said Fincher. “We have four campuses throughout the I-81 corridor. We now offer doctoral degrees, as well as our master’s and undergraduate [programs].”

For Emory & Henry University’s class of 2028, their first day of classes was historic. The freshman class will be the first four-year class for the university.

“I just think it’s such a historic moment,” said freshman Eli Jennings. “We were the first people to ever be on Emory & Henry University as first years, which I think is just really awesome.”

In addition to the name change, new facilities are being added to the school. Progress is being made on the Food City Sportsplex, and a new equestrian center will soon be built. Track and field, soccer and lacrosse are some of the teams that will utilize the new sportsplex.

Freshman Michael Wyman is on the lacrosse team and said he’s excited for the new spaces.

“It just provides us a good opportunity to get our names out there,” said Wyman. “To get our reputation out there and to get ourselves known. So I think it’s great.”

The class of 2025 will also experience a historic moment during the upcoming school year. At graduation, their diplomas will be the first to say Emory & Henry University. This change is exciting for seniors Ryan Vaughan and Noe Martinez.

“It is really cool that we have university on our diplomas now,” said Vaughan. “That’ll take us further if you want to go into graduate studies or that sort of thing.”

“I’m actually glad to have the university there,” said Martinez. “I’m looking forward to walking up the stage, and say [that] my diploma says ‘Emory & Henry University.'”

Fincher added that the transition to University was part of a long-term plan.

“We don’t really view the university status as a final destination,” said Fincher. “It’s a milestone for us along our journey and really is very much aligned with our current strategic plan, which was entitled, ‘Elevate and Excellence.'”
