LEBANON, Va. (WJHL) — Lebanon, Virginia Police Chief Eric Deskins confirmed a woman has died following an apartment fire Wednesday evening. Russell County Sheriff Bill Watson told News Channel 11 that several families have been displaced following the fire.

Watson said the fire took place at Fox Meadows Apartments, where witnesses nearby reported hearing several explosions. Watson noted those explosions were possibly from oxygen tanks in the apartments.

According to the sheriff, the fire has been extinguished, but crews will remain on the scene to monitor in case of a rekindling.

Chief Deskins said a 62-year-old woman died as a result of the fire and the investigation into her death is ongoing.

Watson said several agencies responded and a Virginia State Police (VSP) arson investigator has been called in to assist. Several families were displaced as a result of the fire, according to Watson.

No identities will be released until positive identification can be made, Deskins said.

This is a developing story and updates will be provided as they become available.
