Local micro-school is a new holistic homeschool option

KINGSPORT, Tenn. (WJHL) — Hilton Horizons Academy, a new hybrid micro-school in Kingsport serving 12 kindergarten through 8th-grade students, spoke with News Channel 11 about its opening.

The academy offers holistic homeschool programs that blend personalized learning with enriching activities to create educational and personal growth. Hilton Horizons provides small group and one-on-one tutoring.

Candice Hilton, founder of Hilton Horizons Academy, said the homeschool program is an option for families with busy schedules.

“It is a wonderful opportunity to build a community and some flexibility in your schedule while still allowing your kids to get the academics that they need and the support that you need to start a homeschooling journey,” said Hilton.

In addition to being the founder, Hilton serves as a certified teacher along with three others: an art teacher, a retired K-12 teacher, and an assistant. The academy operates similarly to a traditional K-12 school but offers multiple plans.

“We offer a ten-month schedule. We follow the [traditional] school schedule as far as summer breaks and fall breaks. Your flexibility comes in that we do a two-day plan or a three-day plan. We’re 8:30 to 3:30, and we offer summer camps as well at the time, or if they need support during the summer time.”

Hilton said the area has a significant homeschooling population.

“We have a very large homeschool population in our area that doesn’t offer a lot of support, and we felt that our community could use that support system,” she said.
