CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WJHL) – United States Attorney for the Western District of Virginia Chris Kavanaugh plans to resign from his position at the end of 2024.

Kavanaugh announced on Wednesday in a news release that he would leave the position as his wife, Jasmine Hyejung Yoon, assumes her role as a United States district court judge in September.

During the few months overlap between Yoon’s appointment and Kavanaugh’s resignation, all criminal matters involving the United States will be assigned to other judges in the district.

“Serving as United States Attorney has been the highlight of my professional life,” Kavanaugh said in the release. “I am grateful to President Biden, Attorney General Merrick Garland, Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco, and Senators Warner and Kaine for the opportunity to serve as the chief federal law enforcement official for the Western District of Virginia, and to lead an Office full of public servants dedicated to the rule of law and the pursuit of justice.”

Kavanaugh has served in the U.S. Attorney role since October 2021. He also serves on the Attorney General’s Advisory Committee (AGAC) and chairs the AGAC’s National Security Subcommittee.

The Western District of Virginia includes 52 counties and 17 independent cities.
