GREENEVILLE, Tenn. (WJHL) – It didn’t take long for Greeneville to assert itself in a non-region game against Dobyns-Bennett in Burley Stadium on Friday night.

In fact, the Greene Devils have made a habit of starting fast this season.

“You’re not as tired,” senior running back Carson Quillen said. “The big guys, especially up front, dominate early. We’ve got a lot of explosive players.”

    Players – like Quillen.

The Virginia Tech baseball commit has been a staple on the gridiron these past few seasons. Sometimes so much so, that his spectacular stat lines can get lost in the shuffle.

    But, not this one.

“One of the most dominating running performances we’ve seen in the last few years around here,” Greeneville head coach Eddie Spradlen said.

Quillen toted the ball 21 times, wracking up 241 yards and three touchdowns. He also caught one ball for 12 more yards in the 35-0 win over the Tribe.

“All the guys up front, you know, I thanked them after the game,” Quillen explained. “Couldn’t be happier for those guys.”

In addition to solid play from the O-Line, the senior tailback is is getting even harder to bring down on first contact. It’s the facet of his game that he’s improved the most.

“Got a little bit bigger, weight-wise,” he explained. “So, still being able to maintain that same speed I’ve had … being able to break tackles.”

“He had 75-plus yards after contact,” Spradlen said of his efforts on Friday night. “If you watch him run, he’s always going forward. He’s not going to be knocked back, he’s running forward.”

Quillen’s is the first name on every opposing coach’s scouting report – and for good reason. But, he knows it will take each and every one of the squad’s playmakers to help them reach their ultimate goal.

“Zay (Anderson) had a huge play this past week,” he said. “Caden (Baugh) had a great first game – had a really good second game, too. No matter what they do, we’re going to do what we have to as a team to win.”

The Greene Devils (2-0) will look to remain undefeated when they travel to Cherokee on Friday night.
