ROAN MOUNTAIN, Tenn. (WJHL) — Demolition of the swimming pool at Roan Mountain State Park began Thursday.

It is one of many state park swimming pools that closed following the 2019 season and never reopened.

According to a state parks official, funding has been secured for a replacement amenity: a paved, accessible trail connecting the campground, cabins, and playground.

Flash droughts and disease cause an early show of fall color in some trees

“We are looking forward to the new trail, which will provide visitors and locals with an outdoor recreational opportunity that can be utilized year-round and will connect key parts of the park in a safe manner,” said Kim Schofinski, a spokesperson for the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation, which is over state parks.

Schofinski said Tennessee State Parks is working with Carter County, Elizabethton, and Roan Mountain “regarding potential additional recreational amenities within these communities.”

“We look forward to sharing more details as those conversations continue,” she said.

Crews completed the demolition of David Crockett Birthplace State Park’s pool last week. It will be replaced with a new playscape .

Yea let's send Billions of US taxpayers money to Ukraine but skimp on a state parks and their amenities such as building a new swimming pool for young kids to enjoy when camping with their families ! State parks I thought were supposed to be funded by our government and the state over see that the money goes to the state parks for upkeep and additional equipment if needed !

Ridiculous to take out this pool. Have many good memories of taking our grandchildren and children there. There is nothing for people to do on hot days that are getting even hotter! We surely don’t wanna walk a trail!!! Listen to the people and build a pool!!!
