    JCPD identifies victim in fatal downtown shooting

    JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) — An 18-year-old died and another was injured after a shooting in downtown Johnson City early Sunday morning, the Johnson City Police Department (JCPD) confirmed.

    A spokesperson for the JCPD told News Channel 11 that the shooting took place at around 2 a.m. in the 200 block of East Main Street (Majestic Commons) .

    The JCPD said investigators discovered two victims with gunshot wounds, and they were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

    One victim, identified by police as Charles Dabney, 18, of Greeneville, died due to his injuries.

    Greeneville High School Principal DeAnna Martin provided News Channel 11 with the following statement regarding Dabney’s passing:

    We are deeply saddened to hear of Charles Dabney’s passing, a former student at GHS. This is a tragic situation, and our thoughts and prayers are with the Dabney family, friends, and former classmates during this difficult time. This morning, additional counseling services were made available at Greeneville High School and other schools within the system where he formerly attended, and his siblings currently attend to support students and staff. Counseling support will continue to be available in the days to come.

    The other victim was treated and released, according to the JCPD.

    According to the department, investigators believe the shooting to have been an isolated incident that was a result of an earlier altercation.

    The JCPD said no arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing.
