JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) – Leading by 12 points with under nine minutes remaining, ETSU was nearing an historic upset inside William B. Greene Jr. Stadium on Saturday night.

“Had the No. 2 team in the country beat – let’s just flat out call it what it was,” head coach Tre Lamb said after the game. “I mean done, put a fork in them – game’s over.”

Instead, a couple of bad bounces on special teams and some late-game heroics from Bison quarterback Cam Miller led to a 38-35 loss.

“It’s hard to swallow right now,” Lamb continued.

But, it’s clear, after taking it to one of the top FCS programs in the country for the better part of four quarters, the lights aren’t too bright for this Blue and Gold squad.

Despite the fresh heartbreak of a hard-fought defeat, the Bucs came to the podium preaching resilience and focus when it comes to preparing for their next opponent.

The ball didn’t bounce our way,” ETSU sophomore quarterback Jaylen King said. “I mean, it is what it is – it’s football. We’ve been playing it since we were young kids. Winning and losing is part of it – but we’ll be good.”

“We just know, next week, we know what we’ve got to work on, what we’ve got to do to finish games,” junior linebacker Ty Anderson explained. “I feel like the only thing we need to work on now is finishing.”

Lamb admitted the nature of the loss would lead to less sleep on Saturday night, but vowed to flush it and reorient his team headed into another non-conference tilt with Elon.

“I hate it for our fanbase, I hate it for our students,” Lamb admitted. “Hate it for our administration, because that could have been one of those that kind of skyrockets you.”

“But, if we use it the right way, I think we can use it to skyrocket us into SoCon play.”

Lamb will speak with reporters again at his weekly press conference on Monday at 12 p.m. The Bucs return to the field for a matchup at Elon on Saturday at 6 p.m.
