CARTER COUNTY, Tenn. (WJHL) — The Carter County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) is warning the community of a new phone scam where people pretend to be law enforcement.

The CCSO reports scammers are impersonating officers and calling residents, telling them they have missed jury duty and must pay a fine or they will be arrested.

The scammers are giving the name of an actual officer with the sheriff’s office and are using technology to spoof the number that shows up on Caller ID, according to the CCSO.

“If you receive a scam call like this, do not give the person on the other end of the phone any personal identifying information or any financial information (including birthdates, address or banking information),” the CCSO said.

The sheriff’s office reminds the community they will never call and demand money about a warrant for an arrest.
