Storm Team 11: Flooding rain, high winds, and severe weather to impact the region

Helene Impacts

Flood threat

Ongoing flood warnings continue to expand in our region which means active and ongoing flooding is likely in these areas. Rememeber, turn around don’t drown.

A flood watch remains in effect all day through Friday given the risk for additional flooding from recent rain.  There is a high risk of flooding in western N.C. through Friday with potential catastrophic effects with mud/rockslides, and washed-out roads.

The flood risk is less for the Tri-Cities but still significant.  Rivers will rise and roadways could be flooded with the worst of the flooding expected to peak Friday morning as rainbands from Helene rotate in and through the region.

High wind threat

Tropical storm warnings are in effect for western N.C. with sustained winds of 20mph to 40mph, gusts to 60mph possible.

A high wind warning is in effect for the TN side of the Blue Ridge Mountains tonight through Friday with wind gusts up to 80mph .

Tri-Cities is under a high wind watch with the potential for wind gusts up to 60mph starting tonight through Friday.

Severe threat

Given the track of Helene in and through the region Friday morning, we will be on the “severe” side with potential for tornadoes Friday morning.

A severe risk will persist into early afternoon.
