JOHNSON COUNTY, Tenn. (WJHL) — A temporary shelter has opened up in Mountain City for those affected by severe weather.
Emergency Management Agency Director Jason Blevins told News Channel 11 that several houses throughout Johnson County have been evacuated due to rising water and flooding.
Blevins said multiple roads are blocked and trees are down throughout the county.
“It was a little after midnight,” Blevins said. “I got out about 11:00 just to kind of check the creeks. And about the time I got out, it kind of broke loose. We started getting a bunch of calls and a couple of areas, and I had to go help some folks. I think we did ten or 12 last night. I don’t know the exact number.”
The temporary shelter, located at 1st Christian Church (401 West Main Street, Mountain City), is open to the community and the Red Cross is on-site.
“We’ve had a few, but there’s more of that that is kind of displaced and more planning on coming tonight because of the rain coming in and the winds,” Blevins said. “They feel safer about being in the shelter tonight.”
A flood watch remains in effect all day through Friday in the region.
The worst of the flooding is expected to peak Friday morning as rainbands from Hurricane Helene rotate in and through the region.
