SULLIVAN COUNTY, Tenn. (WJHL) — The parents of a four-month-old child were arrested and charged in connection with the death of their child in Sullivan County.

The Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) reported it responded to a 911 call on Sept. 15 from the 900 block of Queens Garden Private Drive regarding a four-month-old infant who was not breathing.

The infant was taken to an area hospital and was later pronounced deceased, the SCSO reported. An autopsy performed on Sept. 16 determined the infant’s cause of death as homicide.

The infant’s parents, identified by police as Lucas Carter Jr., 23 and Madison Rehart, 24, were interviewed by investigators, and their phones were examined.

Evidence found suggested that Carter and Rehart were responsible for the child’s death and didn’t seek medical care for the child, the SCSO stated.

On Sept. 17, Carter and Rehart were arrested and charged with aggravated assault for failing to protect the child as the investigation was ongoing, the sheriff’s office reported.

The case was presented to a grand jury on Wednesday and a true bill was returned charging the duo with first-degree murder and aggravated child abuse/neglect/endangerment.

As of Thursday, Carter and Rehart are being held on a $500,000 bond.
