CARTER COUNTY, Tenn. (WJHL) – The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) is keeping a close eye on Watauga Dam after catastrophic flooding struck the Tri-Cities region.

TVA: Nolichucky Dam remains intact as river crests, water receding

On Saturday, the TVA stated in a news release it was “actively monitoring levels at our Watauga Dam in Carter County, Tennessee.”

According to the TVA, the headwater at the dam hit an elevation of 1970.2′. The elevation set a new pool of record by three feet, the TVA stated.

As of Saturday, the TVA reports the pool at the Watauga Dam has crested, and efforts are underway to get water out of the reservoir.

Water is being released at the Watauga and Wilbur Dams to relieve the reservoirs.

A Condition Red Warning had previously been activated at the Nolichucky Dam in Greene County amid concerns that the dam could fail. However, the TVA announced on Saturday that the dam had remained intact and the Nolichucky River had crested and waters were receding.
