NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Tennessee’s 43rd governor, Winfield Dunn, passed away peacefully Saturday afternoon, surrounded by family, at the age of 97, Gov. Bill Lee’s office announced.

According to a statement released by Lee’s office on Saturday, Sept. 28, Dunn was born in Meridian, Mississippi, on July 1, 1927. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II and then served as a reserve lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force.

Dunn graduated from the University of Mississippi in 1950, which is the same year he married his wife, Betty. He continued his education at the University of Tennessee Medical Units in Memphis, earning his D.D.S. before going on to practice dentistry in Shelby County.

Officials said Dunn was elected governor of Tennessee in 1970, becoming the first Republican to hold that title in 50 years, even though he had never held public office prior to his election.

While serving as governor from 1971 to 1975, Dunn created a statewide kindergarten program, established public parks, prioritized highway construction, and created the Department of Economic and Community Development, according to Lee’s office. Dunn also served as chairman of both the University of Tennessee Board of Trustees and the Tennessee State Board of Regents.

“Governor Dunn’s life is marked by a profound faith in the Lord, a deep love for his family and friends, and unwavering service to the people of Tennessee,” Saturday’s release stated, adding that Dunn deeply valued civility and unified the Volunteer State as governor.
