Johnson City, TN — Earlier this week, Major League Baseball lost an icon and one of its most controversial figures, Pete Rose, who died at the age of 83.

One guy who got to know Rose as a kid and then went on to play for him is Providence Academy baseball coach Jeff Reed who played for 7 major league baseball teams
including 5 years with the Cincinnati Reds —- coached by Rose.
When it comes to whether or not Rose should be placed in the Hall of Fame after being banned for life over gambling on the game, his opinion is somewhat split.

“You vote him in as a player? I don’t think he’ll get voted as a manager. Did he did he gamble when he was playing? I would say not so in my mind. There’s no question that he did both. Now, if you’ve got an appointment as a manager, no, you shouldn’t get it. What do you get? 4592 hits or something like that I don’t think they’ll ever be broken. I think he should be remembered that way. I think he should be remembered for the way he played the game, says Reed.”

Reed, is one of the few catchers in baseball history to ever catch a perfect game. Tom Browning was on the mound in 1988.
