KINGSPORT, Tenn. (WJHL) — Internal construction has started on a Rural King slated to go into the Fort Henry Mall, and work on an IMAX Theatre is aiming to start in January, the Kingsport Economic Development Department said in a post on Monday.

The department said Hull Property Group reported that demolition work has already begun inside the former JCPenny store to make way for the new Rural King. The current goal is to host a Spring grand opening, the post said.

According to the department, design and development plans are complete for the upcoming IMAX Theatre and are awaiting approval from the IMAX company. Once that approval is given, a full set of engineering plans will be created, which take around six weeks, the department said.

When the engineering plans are finalized and approved again by IMAX, total costs for the project will be calculated. The current goal to begin construction is mid-January, according to the department.

Restaurant outparcels are also close to being finalized, the department said.
