JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) — With the region growing faster than it has in decades and Johnson City at the epicenter of that growth, this year’s Johnson City Commission election is highly consequential. Voters, who can begin early voting Wednesday, will choose from among nine candidates to fill just three open seats on the five-member board.
News Channel 11 invited each candidate in for a five-question interview. None of those questions were provided in advance. All nine candidates participated. Their answers, in video form, are included in this digital story that will be prominently featured on WJHL.com through the end of the election period Nov. 5.
News Channel 11 has also included audio-only versions for anyone who prefers listening to the questions and answers at their convenience, podcast-style. For the entire five-question segment in one audio file, click below. Each individual question is also provided further down.
The candidates include all three incumbents whose seats are up for re-election — Todd Fowler, Aaron Murphy and Joe Wise — as well as second-time candidates John Baker and Jay Emberton, both of whom ran in 2022. Newcomers to competing in a Johnson City Commission race include Joseph Coates, Greg Cox, Jacob Luallen and Bo Westmoreland.
The questions for these candidates included:
