Johnson City hosts first Main Street Days celebration

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) – Retailers, artists and other merchants gathered in Downtown Johnson City on Saturday for the first Main Street Days celebration.

Main Street Days is a street festival that promotes small businesses, local musicians, crafters, and makers. According to its website , it is a “new celebration of community, empowerment, and resilience.”

The festival welcomed more than 30 restaurants, five local breweries and over 80 vendors, including a honey seller and crocheters. Lindsey Jones, Main Street director of Johnson City, said the celebration is a vision that has come to life.

“We’ve got art demonstrations, live music on several corners, and it’s a really great town,” said Jones. “For many years, we have had a big request that we need street festivals again in downtown Johnson City. Planning them has challenges, but I’m really happy we can bring them alive. We started planning this a couple of months ago with a couple of downtown merchants, just kind of bringing some ideas together.”

Jones said it is encouraging to see the community come together for a day of fun just weeks after Hurricane Helene destroyed parts of the Tri-Cities region.

“So it’s really wonderful to see the community come together today, happy faces everywhere,” she said. “It’s beautiful weather, and we really need some happy things right now. We’ve had a lot going on around our community, so come out and support local.”

Main Street Days will take place until 8 p.m. on Saturday.

Organizers said they plan to host the festival as an annual event.
